Agathonissi is the northernmost island of the Dodecanese cluster and is a short distance south of Samos. According to its geographical location, it is the northeast boundary between the Dodecanese and the maritime area near the Asia Minor coast, mainly at the mouth of the Meander River and Miletus. The island has an area of 14.4 sq. Km. and a 32km coastline and a 10km road network. It is 25 nautical miles from Patmos, 18 from Samos and just 8 miles from the Asia Minor coast. The permanent population is 186 (according to the 2011 census). During the occupation, the island was named Gaidouronissi, a manifestation of its shape, and thus appears on many naval charts. The current name of Agathonisi is due to a meteorology of the thorny plant that is abundant on the island. Agathonissi is surrounded by six islets: Rabbit or Rabbit in the south, Nero or Neronisi, Round or Round, Pie or Dish or Fathonisi or Psatho and Praso in the north and Katsagani or Gatso. It is an ideal place for yachting.
